So, in January 1997, Sandra finishes up a "Major project" and we take off for a couple of weeks of rest and relaxation in Hawaii. We dragged along a lot of snorkeling gear and did our best to get wet during our stay...about the 4th snorkel trip I broke a fin strap...nothing major just gotta find a dive shop. Walked into Big Island Divers and they are showing this video...A night dive with the Manta's. Within about 35 seconds I'm hooked...promise the dive shop guys I'll be back next year with dive certification in hand...Of all the sights I've seen under water in my life, I have never been more entranced or mystified by the flight of the manta. We have been back to Hawaii now 6 times and each time I go on at least one and sometimes 2 night dives with the mantas. The manta has become my totem of sorts. Such large animals feeding on tiny little plankton, giant wingspans and yet so incredibly graceful, a wonder to see.

My friend Dave Carr is the one who shot the video that got me hooked. I have had the pleasure of his company on many dives, both night and day. Dave's video prowess is unmatched...His dive footage has been used by several TV and movie productions in the US, Japan and other countries. He was kind enough to send me some stills of me and a friend on our dive on August 1, 2000. These have been enlarged quite a bit, it's night, we're about 30 feet under water, and Dave says his camera focus was set wrong...you get the picture.
